Three WWA Leading Edge Awards 2021 for WhiteWater Projects
At the annual World Waterpark Association Show in San Antonio, Texas, in October, WhiteWater accepted three Leading Edge Awards for their contribution to some truly outstanding projects:
- Studio City Water Park in Macau SAR, China
- Tsunami Surge at Hurricane Harbor Chicago, USA
- Parallel Pursuit at Nocatee Spray Park, USA
Awarded to suppliers who have “developed new concepts, products, or services to the benefit of park members, their customers and the water attractions industry,” these three projects were recognized for their uniqueness and significance.
First in Macau: Studio City Water Park
The first and only water park in Macau, Studio City Water Park’s opening is a serious step toward transforming the city from a casino-based economy to a family leisure hub for the 72 million people living in the Greater Bay Area. Built on a rooftop, the unusual placement of the project required special considerations for mechanicals, piping, and secondary containment. With the hotel towering over, the general look and feel of the water park had to align with the prevailing theme of wealth and fortune, which resulted in two water slides with metallic gold and silver paint finishes—a rarity in the industry.
Even with the small footprint, WhiteWater, together with aquatic designer, WTI, were able to creatively maximize capacity and deliver fun for the whole family, from big water slides for thrill seekers to interactive water play for small children.
World’s Tallest Water Coaster: Tsunami Surge
No stranger to record breakers, Six Flags came to WhiteWater and architecture firm, Ramaker, with the ambition of creating the world’s tallest water coaster to help punctuate the first season of its water park operating as a stand-alone destination. Having achieved its goal, the new Master Blaster, named Tsunami Surge, measures 26 meters (86 feet), or more than eight stories high, has a top speed of 45 kilometers per hour (28 miles per hour), and is Hurricane Harbor Chicago’s only water slide to propel riders uphill. The new attraction is at the height of visual appeal and safety, using AquaLucent fiberglass effects for unexpected bursts of light and advanced water jets and launch conveyors to streamline operations.
True Side-by-Side Racing: Parallel Pursuit
The latest addition to WhiteWater’s racing water slide portfolio, Parallel Pursuit’s innovation lies in the low separating walls that allow riders to truly compete side by side. Rivals can see and hear each other through straightaways and turns, and in open and enclosed sections. Its flexible configuration means that the attraction can fit in tight footprints and around existing structures—all with an affordable price tag. The first installation of Parallel Pursuit at Nocatee Spray Park in Florida in June has elevated the ride mix of the water park and increased the number of guests using it, thus providing substantial value to the planned community.
While 2021 has provided the water park industry with many challenges, it is an honour to have the hard work, perseverance, and creative problem-solving of WhiteWater’s engineers, designers, project managers, installers, and industry partners recognized in this way. “The significance of these three winning projects goes beyond their respective water parks in a year when creating places where fun thrives hasn’t been easy. So, it is a great feeling to see the hard work and collaboration of our teams recognized by industry professionals,” said Paul Chutter, WhiteWater’s President and CCO.
