At a media event earlier this month, Carowinds revealed its next big ride—a sensational Super Flume called “Rip Roarin’ Falls” that’s got the industry buzzing with excitement.

Why? Because flume rides are classics that generations of families know and love. To have one that breaks records—well, that’s even better! Recently though, many water rides are being decommissioned, largely due to their age and the work required to maintain them.

Guests, however, have been demanding them back. When Carowinds surveyed its guests, the results showed that a flume ride was the number one attraction they wanted to have again.

So the park didn’t just announce the return of a staple ride; they announced a reimagining of one that would incorporate technical advances, break three world records, allow more accessibility, and tell a mysterious story with lovable characters.

To create a first-of-its-kind attraction like this, WhiteWater’s designers and engineers worked closely with Carowinds to bring their ambitions to life and a break a few records along the way.

Breaking World Records

Rides such as the log flume, or its bigger sibling, Super Flume, finish with an iconic splashdown that guests on a hot summer’s day crave. That stomach-tingling drop has a typical height of 15 or 20 meters (49 to 65 feet).

Rip Roarin’ Falls demonstrates that the drop height and ride path need not be standardized; these can make headlines of their own:

  • World’s tallest water ride drop at 100 feet (30 meters) tall, reaching up to 50 mph (80 km/h)
  • World’s tallest reverse drop on a water ride, at 42 feet (13 meters) tall
  • World’s tallest reverse camelback drop on a water ride, with two backward moments

Two Types of Track Switches

A simple yet impactful technology for the guest experience is the track switch, and Rip Roarin’ Falls has two types. The first is a rotary switch that changes the direction of the vehicle quickly and syncs the motion with the narrative. From forward travel to reverse, this track switch works with the attraction’s show system to tell a story full of suspense and mischief.

The second is a lateral track switch. It runs parallel to the main track and accommodates the loading and unloading of guests who have special mobility needs—without interrupting the main flow of vehicles. This feature not only makes Rip Roarin’ Falls more accessible and ADA-compliant; it allows these guests and their group as much time as they need to load and unload, without drawing attention to themselves.

Enhanced Comfort and Safety for Guests

To keep the riders in place, a common ratcheting lap bar shared between a row of two riders gets the job done. Since the bar locks in discrete increments using a mechanical system, it does not fit well if you have riders of two different sizes sitting together, for example, a big dad with his 6-year-old child.

That’s where the individual hydraulic lap bars come in. For form-fitting comfort, each rider is provided with a padded bar that adjusts perfectly to their body size. So when a large body sits next to a smaller body, they can both be safely secured for the thrills that come. These bars also come with grips for smaller hands to hold and self-soothe during scary moments. An integrated knee restraint secures single riders so that they can enjoy the ride without being shifted around in their seat.

Advances That Ease Maintenance

We have already established that guests love water rides, but do operators? To extend the vehicle lifespan, WhiteWater’s water rides have high-tech composite bodies, with corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel, marine-grade aluminum, marine-standard polyethylene, and anti-corrosion coatings. As much as possible, the boats are built with easily swappable parts and off-the-shelf components so the operator can keep the ride running without having to deal with long lead times for custom replacement parts.

In addition, each Super Flume boat features eight easily removable floor panels for quick maintenance access.

Perfect for Immersive Storytelling

Water rides can be so much more than a refreshing plummet and a splash. With rushing waters, relaxing river sections, directional changes, and different drop profiles, water rides are perfect for taking guests on a story arc, with a beginning, middle, and end.

Advances in theming and control systems allow a water ride to tell more immersive stories than ever before. While the park is responsible for the overall narrative, WhiteWater’s Water Rides team works closely with the client to craft the boats to the theme, match the ride motion and speed to fit the story, and add other water features along the way, such as geysers.

Reimagining a Classic for a New Generation

Rip Roarin’ Falls shows that even the most iconic attractions can evolve. Through close collaboration between Carowinds and WhiteWater, this classic ride experience has been reimagined with record-breaking thrills, greater accessibility, enhanced rider comfort, easier maintenance, and immersive storytelling. As parks look for attractions that deliver both nostalgia and innovation, projects like this demonstrate how WhiteWater helps bring new life to timeless favourites.
